Led by Evan Shaner, S&CO. is built on the belief that good design is good design: creative solutions exist irrespective of constraint.
The practice is small and senior, staying nimble and close to every project and client. The work is clean and restrained, but not bound to a fixed style; each design follows from its site, brief, and client, grounded in functional efficiency and honest materiality.

Process
Keeping the practice lean allows for close collaboration, direct communication, transparent decisions, and fast-paced production. Each project begins with a clear understanding of its constraints, keeping the design free of needless complexity.
Projects typically follow traditional phasing, adapted to the client: Concept and Schematic Design, Design Development, Construction Documents, and Construction Administration, each closing with a cost estimate.
Design moves freely between 2D and 3D from the outset, increasing in resolution with regular client presentations. Before construction begins, we will have walked through every space together in a real-time model.
Coordination
Evan acts on the client’s behalf throughout. Whether leading a project or working alongside an existing team, S&CO. coordinates all engineers, consultants, and contractors involved, bringing together their expertise so questions are addressed early. Decisions are made with the client, from a considered set of options shaped around their priorities and accompanied by a clear recommendation.
Services
S&CO. offers full-service design, from early feasibility through construction, including interiors and custom millwork. Services can be engaged in full or individually, and extend beyond what is listed here.
Focus
Based in Los Angeles, S&CO. works primarily in residential design, taking on cultural, commercial, and retail projects selectively. The practice gives particular focus to site-sensitive work on coastal, hillside, and otherwise challenging terrain.
If you’re curious about working together, want to study the feasibility of a particular site, or simply want to talk through an idea, let’s start the conversation.
